Seven Grandfather Teachings

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund celebrates all the diverse Indigenous identities and perspectives throughout Turtle Island. The Seven Grandfather Teachings are a guide for how we should treat ourselves, each other, and all things.

As you engage with DWF platforms and content, please be respectful and kind.

Humility – Dbaadendiziwin

Be humble in your dealings with the people and communities you meet. Listen to others with an open heart and mind, while respecting your own limitations.

Bravery – Aakwa’ode’ewin

Hold space for difficult conversations and answer with kindness, be brave enough to admit when you do not know the answer, and accept the challenge to learn more. Be courageous and strong in your commitment to reconciliation, thinking not only of those around you but of the land and the many generations yet to come.

Honesty – Gwekwaadziwin

Share your knowledge of Canada’s residential school system honestly with others. Ask questions when information seems false or may require further discussion. Accept yourself and use your gifts of knowledge, art, language, and self to create change and acceptance without deceiving yourself or others.

Wisdom – Nbwaakaawin

Learn with your head and lead with your heart. Share your strengths and understanding with others while recognizing the importance of ensuring the interests, rights, and cultures of Indigenous Peoples are respected and understood throughout Canada in schools, workplaces, homes, and communities.

Truth – Debwewin

Without truth, there cannot be reconciliation. Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and figure out ways to make those calls a reality. Encourage others to do the same. Share your knowledge and understanding with others to help create and inspire meaningful reconciliACTIONs. Be sincere and honest in all you speak and do.

Respect – Mnaadendimowin

Respect the opinions and teachings of others. Respect one another’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Do your best to create a safe space for everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to engage in meaningful learning, understanding, and connection.

Love – Zaagidwin

Love is at the heart of all teachings. Vow to move reconciliation forward in meaningful ways with love. Spread awareness and be kind to those around you.

Understand that there are different teachings and protocols that should be followed in different communities and spaces and vow to do your part to respect those Nations and communities in which you are a visitor.
