DWF aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. One of the ways we promote understanding and connection is by sharing important cultural resources, like this calendar.
About the calendar

The Anishinaabe calendar is deeply rooted in the cycles of the moon. The turtle shell is a visual match for the days and moons in a lunar year: the outer ring of the shell has small scales representing the 28 days in a lunar month, while the larger scales in the center symbolize the 13 moons of the year. Each of these moons is named after a natural event that takes place during that time.
Spanning from September 2024 to August 2025, the calendar takes an important step toward decolonization by focusing on Indigenous dates of significance—dates that are important to the histories, cultures, and traditions of Indigenous peoples – rather than colonial dates.
The calendar also highlights Legacy Schools reconciliACTIONs— actions taken by classrooms, schools, and groups throughout Canada to move reconciliation forward. We hope that these reconciliACTIONS inspire you to engage in your own meaningful actions that support reconciliation.
How DWF Moves Reconciliation Forward
The Legacy Schools program is a national initiative offering free resources to Educators and youth group leaders to help them teach not only the true history of Canada, but also the richness, strength, and resilience of Indigenous cultures.
The ReconciliACTION Calendar is just one example of the resources we offer to educators and organizations in their toolkits. It serves as an educational tool that helps to deepen understanding and inspire action to help bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. By engaging with the calendar, you’re not only enriching your own understanding but advancing our collective journey towards reconciliation.
