Have a Wonderful Summer, Legacy Schools!
What an amazing year for our Legacy Schools program! Through your support, students expanded their knowledge and learned new ways of moving reconciliation forward. Our art workshops for National Indigenous History Month continue, the poster challenge winners have been announced, and we even managed to sneak in one more in-person Artist Ambassador visit before the summer break! Take a look at how we are wrapping up the 2021 – 2022 school year below!
Poster Challenge Winners
This year’s Spring Poster Contest theme was, ’What does reconciliACTION mean to you, your family, or your community?’ Winning students received an amazing prize pack including an Orange Shirt from the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund!
Posters were graded on the following:
- Did they answer the theme’s question?
- Did they use resources that represented First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities in their area?
- Did they reflect on what reconciliation means and what actions they believe are needed to move it forward?
- Did they consider any of the TRC’S 94 Calls to Action?

Art Workshops for National Indigenous History Month
Students at Yarmouth Elementary in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia pose with their new seal skin bracelets after learning about Inuit culture through lived experience and cultural items hosted by Frances Palliser-Nicholas & Rebecca Salmonson.
Our virtual Artist workshops have been a huge success! Throughout the months of May and June, students have been learning about Indigenous culture, history, and skills from a participating artist.
Artists Ambassadors include Lindsay Lickers (Beading and Treaties workshop), Patrick Hunter (Painting And Grandfather Teachings), Zoey Roy (Creating Hip Hop workshop), Destiny Hoostie/Takaya Indigenous Designs (Beading and Cree Language workshop), Mimi O’Bonsawin (Song Writing), and Frances Palliser & Rebecca Salmonson (Seal Skin Bracelet Making).
Artist Ambassador Visit to Pimicikamak Cree Nation with Peatr Thomas
Peatr Thomas speaks about the murals he has created in Winnipeg before doing hands-on painting workshops with youth at Mikisew High School in Cross Lake, MB, Cree Pimicikamak Nation.
Students enjoyed creating their own original artworks inspired by Peatr Thomas, who is originally from Cross Lake, MB. Using stencils and canvas, students were able to create their own original spray paintings.
