Artist Ambassador Workshop for Indigenous History Month

Want to have your class learn to paint a beautiful original painting while learning about Anishinaabe culture? Or perhaps you’d like to undertake a beading project with youth while learning about treaties or language. Or maybe your students/youth are interested in making bracelets using seal skin and learning about traditional hunting practices. Wherever your interest lies, we have a workshop for you!

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) is offering 20 free Artist Ambassador Workshops to 20 Legacy Schools groups throughout Canada.

Who can participate: All applicants must be registered in the Legacy Schools to be selected. Sign up here to be a Legacy School and learn more about the benefits of joining this free program. We will be selecting at least one class in every province and territory to participate. Workshops will be adjusted based on group age range.

What: Artist workshops will be led virtually by a participating Artist Ambassador and will be 1-2 hours long. All supplies will be shipped ahead of the agreed upon time slot.

When: Artist Ambassador Workshops will take place between May 15 and June 30, 2022. Workshops will be scheduled based on group and artist availability and we cannot guarantee which workshop you will receive.

Applications close: April 15, 2022

Selected schools will be notified no later than April 30, 2022

*Groups/classes chosen must provide media waivers for any students appearing in photos or video. We hope to share the students’ experiences with DWF followers to inspire reconciliACTION.

Lindsay Lickers

Ontario

Beading and Treaties workshop

Lindsey is an Ongweoweh/ Anishinaabe artist & community developer originally from Six Nations of the Grand River with ancestral roots to the Mississauga’s of the New Credit. She specializes in painting & beading as well as arts and culture facilitation, Indigenous governance, community and program development. Her traditional name is ‘Mushkiiki Nibi Kwe’, which translates to ‘Medicine Water Woman’ and she is turtle clan.

Patrick Hunter

Ontario

Painting and Grandfather Teachings

Patrick Hunter is a 2-Spirit Ojibwe painter, graphic designer, and entrepreneur from Red Lake, ON. In 2011, he made the move to Toronto to pursue a career in the visual arts after completing the graphic design program at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.

In 2014 he launched Patrick Hunter Art & Design, with the focus being specializing in original and digital artwork and designs from his Ojibwe roots with the intent to create a broader awareness of Indigenous culture and iconography. He is best known for his paintings in the Woodland art style.

Zoey Roy

Creating Hip Hop workshop

Artist. Activator. Aunty. Zoey Roy is a force. Her performances weave storytelling, rap, theatre and rhythm and blues together to confront life and find pathways of reconnecting to the true nature of who we are.

Zoey is dedicated to working with young people as much as she is dedicated to tending to the inner child within all of us. She brings messages of love, fun and perseverance into learning spaces worldwide – mostly through songwriting workshops.

Destiny Hoostie, Takaya Indigenous Designs

British Columbia

Beading and Cree language workshop

I am of mixed descent – Assiniboine from the White Bear First Nation in Saskatchewan on my mothers side and Norwegian and German from my father’s side. I am the founder of Takaya Indigenous Designs which is an Indigenous woman-owned business that creates beading kits. I aspire to help teach and promote Indigenous beaded art through this journey. 

Mimi O’Bonsawin

Song writing workshop (French available)

Mimi is she happy to be working with us again offering a Song Writing workshops for Legacy Schools in French or English.

Mimi O’Bonsawin epitomizes the powerful scenery of Northern Ontario and the beauty of its waters through her music, all the while yielding to her French Canadian and Abenaki roots. Her musical creations flow through a centre of love, with the intention of giving back and spreading awareness.

Frances Palliser – Nicholas & Rebecca Salmonson

Nova Scotia

Seal Skin Bracelet Making

Join us to learn about Inuit culture through lived experience enriched with cultural items shared. Frances Palliser-Nicholas & Rebecca Salmonson will provide instructions on how to make your very own seal skin bracelet. We will discuss the importance of hunting and obtaining country food as well as traditions related to sewing and survival in the harsh temperatures of the north.
